What accessories does a bird feeder actually need?
A pole and a tray cover almost everything. A shepherd hook puts the feeder where you want it rather than where a branch happens to be, and a catcher tray stops the spill that brings rats. British Bird Feeders stocks both, plus hangers for fitting a feeder to an existing branch or bracket.

Often yes. A branch puts the feeder within jumping distance of squirrels and makes cleaning awkward. A shepherd hook lets you stand the feeder in open lawn, well away from any launch point, and you can move it around the garden so droppings and spilled husks never build up in one place.
It sits under the feeder and catches the husks and seed the birds knock out, which would otherwise rot into the lawn and attract rats. It also gives ground-feeding birds like robins, dunnocks and blackbirds somewhere clean to feed, so one feeder ends up serving twice as many species.
At least a third of its total length, and more in light or sandy soil. A 90cm hook needs roughly 30cm in the ground. Water the spot first if the ground is hard, push rather than hammer, and check it again after the first windy week — poles work loose before they fall.
